10th anniversary collectors edition - Hardback - Titan Books ISBN 1852869852 (UK)
Dave McKean was a huge influence on me during my years in Art College, along with Bill Sienkiewicz and Kent Williams, they finally gave me proof for my tutors that there was art in the comics industry and a belief that being an illustrator was a good thing. This was the first release by McKean and Gaiman and in my mind it is as strong today as it was back then. Originally released in black and white it has recently been reprinted in photographic quality to capture the excellant pencil work and artistic touches that make it so special, so you have no excuse not to get it. |

Arkham Asylum.By Grant Morrison and McKean. 124 pages
Published by Titan books in 1989. Hardback ISBN 1 85286 256 4
Softback by Titan books ISBN 1 85286 280 7 (UK)
Softback by Warner books ISBN 0930289560 (US)
This release made such a big impact at the time, widely advertised and hugely anticipated. And no doubt a lot of pressure on McKean to change the face of comics. This was a very dark comic, and beautifully packaged. The hardback and softback share the same cover. |

Signal To Noise.By Neil Gaiman and McKean. 80 pages
Trade paperback published by Victor Gollancz Ltd 1992.
Orion books ISBN 0 575 05284 8 (UK)
Dark Horse comics ISBN 1569711445 (US)
This was first serialised in the Face magazine, during the time when comics were cool, renamed graphic novels and aimed at the older audience. A doom and gloom story that sees a turning in McKeans style and a growing use of photographs and manipulated lasercopies. It was collected together for the trade paperback with extra pages added. |

The tragical comedy or comical tragedy of Mr.Punch. Any one who has ever seen a Punch and Judy show and actually remembers the story will know, Mr.Punch was a sick little monkey. This tale, seen through the eyes of a young boy, blends Punch in perfectly. This was created around the time of Cages, and has a wide variety of styles. |

Voodoo Lounge.By Dave McKean Published by Marvel Music. A 48 page one off comic book. ISBN 0 7851 0081 4 A comic strip based on lyrics by the Rolling Stones. I have absolutely no idea what is going on in it but it looks nice. A lot of manipulated photographic image work. |

The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish. By Neil Gaiman and McKean.
Hardback book published by White Wolf. ISBN 1 56504 944 6
This is a beautiful book. A young boy really does swap his dad for two goldfish but getting him back is not that easy. This is like a childrens book for adults. It is soo nice. Those who have children have a perfect excuse to buy it, feeling good in the knowledge that it is actually for themselves. With a naïve style of art to compliment the work it also has the McKean flavour and will still please the fans.

 Issue 1 cover |
Cages. By Dave McKean
A 500 page 10 issue series. Now available in a limited print collected edition.
Kitchen sink press ISBN 0878166009 (or ISBN 0878166017)
This is as near as you can get to the stories going on in McKeans mind. The story starts and ends with an artist who has moved into a new appartment to try and work on his paintings. It flows into the lives of the other tennants within the building and there are some strange goings-on. It is worked mostly in his black and white style, with the odd suprise splash of colour, which all works with the excellant story. It seemed to take forever for the 10 issues to get completed as commissions and projects took over. The individual issues are now hard to find but it is available as a big heavy collected hard back book. I imagine that this will also become hard to find soon so get one while you can. It may be some time before the next reprint. In the UK there was also a very limited amount of editions that were signed by McKean and also included a CD of his music. You wont get one now so dont ask.

This is a must-have book. All of the sandman covers collected in one book, along with some of the extra work created for the collected paperbacks. He`s been messing with a few of the images and updating them, adding graphical touches here and there, but it is all presented perfectly without the logo`s and typeface interference from the comic. (although i liked the issue 26 cover the way it was originally. bah!)
You must buy this book! |

 Card pack cover |
The Cafe Des Amis Du Mexique postcard set. By Dave McKean.
A beautiful wrap-around card cover containing a set of 18 full colour postcards published by The Cafe Des Amis, Hourglass and Allen Spiegal Fine Arts. All images created especially for Cafe Des Amis where McKean was also inspired to create his pepper obsessed 'Club Salsa' story.
These are still pretty easy to get hold of. I bought mine through a comics shop. You can also try online through comic or book sites. So dont be fooled into bidding high prices at some unnecessary online auction. You can probably also send off for them from Allen Spegial Fine Arts (address on the links page) Or maybe direct from the UK Cafe itself. (address on the Cafe Des Amis web page)
Click the image to check out the postcards and the information on my Cafe Des Amis page. And then go and buy them. |

 Card pack cover |
Private View postcard set. By Dave McKean.
A beautiful set of 16 photographic quality printed postcards published by Allen Spiegal Fine Arts.
Originally created to go along with his touring exhibition in 1996 they give a good cross section sample of work. Some may still be available through Allen Spiegel. They are well worth owning and a must for any fans of McKean but unfortunatley are going to be harder to get hold of if Allen Spegial no longer have any. Although according to my local comic shop, Dave McKean himself is making sure the distributors have all his latest work in stock and these cards are amongst them. So ask a good comic shop for your copies.
To see the postcard set click on the image and visit the Private View pages. |

 Calendar cover |
Anthropomorphik calendar 1997. By Dave McKean.
By Hourglass and Allen Speigal Fine Arts. A beautiful, large format calendar in full colour with an extra copper ink worked into some of the images. Very nice.
You wont be able to get it now though because it's not 1997 and, you know what its like, they are just so hard to get hold of. Limited print, so you will have a lot of work to find one and then fight to get it.
To see the images from the calendar just click on the calendar cover and visit my Anthropomorphic page. |

The first book of McKeans to contain just his photographic work. A softback book full of stunning black and white photographs. An excellant display of photo montage and style. It was a limited print run that sold out very quickly. The first edition is now out of print and is very hard to get hold of. You wont find this in any shops.
You will be glad to hear that there is now a second edition in print, this is also a limited print run so you will have to get moving and buy your copies while you can. It is limited to 2,500 Italian and 1,500 UK copies.
You can have a look the images on the Dreamline web site and see for yourself how nice they are. See the Links page for the, you guessed it, link. |

By Macchia Nera, Hourglass and Allen Speigal Fine Arts. 1st edition hardback: out of print
2nd edition hardback: ISBN 0-9642069-1-9
The second book of McKeans superb photographic work. A nice collection of dark and moody photographs, some of which have been worked into various CD covers and illustrations of his. They have the same bizarre quality as Joel Peter Witkins work but with the impossible fantasy world taking over.
Again, I cant believe how fast this sold out. And again, the first printing is very hard to get hold of. There is now a second edition print run available to those quick enough to get one. As with the 2nd edition of B&W lies it is limited to 2,500 Italian and 1,500 UK copies.
You can have a look the images on the Dreamline web site and see for yourself how nice they are. Find it on the Links page. |
