MIRRORMASK - A visual feast for McKean fans
So far I've seen it three times, and I plan to be watching it even more when the DVD gets released. Luckily for you in the U.S. you get to see it in the cinema from the 30th September, us poor fans in the U.K. have to wait a little longer, so make sure you get there and check it out. It looks incredible, and maybe even more than than 'The Week Before' it really feels like McKeans artwork brought to life.
Although some of Gaimens story seems simplistic it is the settings and characters that make this a great family film, some of the visuals are quite dark and menacing, kids will love it. There are some really supurb moments in this film that I enjoyed. The orbiting giants who use each others opposing gravity to stay floating together in the air. I loved this bit, the atmospere and the music was amazing. I want you to watch this film so we can have a chat about how great this bit is : )
I liked them so much Ive made my own windows backdrop, shared lower down the page. Another nice section has the Monkey Birds, they are really funny, an almost slapstick Marx brothers kind of moment followed by a spectacular chase scene. That really took me by suprise, I really wish it went on longer. I also liked the library books with a life of their own, the cartoon sequence with mouse orchestra and the really creepy Sphinx cats.
But it's the visuals... I can't stop looking at it, all that artwork, all the layers built up by McKeans own hands. The team he put together have done a great job of the CG and really helped keep the film looking like McKeans work. For such a tight budget this is incredible.
Check out Helens room, look at all that artwork..
I can't wait for the artbook to come out - there must be so much of this stuff to go in judging by the amount in the film.
Heres another funny thing... I was an extra in the film. Some of the film was shot in my current home town of Brighton. When Helen jumps on the bus near the beginning, I was on that bus with a bunch of other extras who can't be seen through the bus windows, haha. Shame too as we were the strangest looking bunch of bus occupants you could get, and we weren't in costume : )
It was great to see McKean at work and I managed to grab a shot of him from the bus while we waited.
